Born in Columbus, OH, renowned American photographer Adger Cowans now lives and works in Bridgeport, CT. Cowans studied photography at Ohio University and became one of their first African American photography students to receive his BFA. He later studied at the School of Motion Picture Arts and the School of Visual Arts in New York City. In 1969 he became one of the first (if not the first) African American film still photographers voted into Local Union 644 (now Local Union 600) in New York City. Cowans has used his art to capture the beauty of life and the effects of racism. Paralleling the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s and 1970s, the Black Arts Movement sought to center the work of Black artists. As part of that movement, Cowans helped establish a Black photographer collective called the Kamoinge Workshop in 1963. They derived their name from a Kenyan word, meaning “a group of people acting together” and worked to “Honor, document, preserve, and represent the history and culture of the African Diaspora with integrity and respect for humanity through the lens of Black Photographers.” One of the photographic luminaries of our time, Cowans has worked with and contributed to the work of film. and photography greats, including Gordon Parks at LIFE magazine as well as Francis Ford Coppola, Sidney Lumet, Spike Lee, and many others. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Harvard Art Museum, the International Center of Photography, and the Whitney Museum are among the many institutions that have both exhibited and collected his photographs. This year, Cowans has been inducted into the International Photography Hall of Fame, as well as receiving the 2025 Lucie Award for Achievement in Fine Art. INTRO The work of Adger Cowans taps into our shared humanity. From joyful everyday scenes to dignified portraits and historic moments, Cowans instills emotion and power into each of his images. As Cowans says, “I don’t take pictures with my eyes; I take pictures with my heart.” As part of the Kamoinge Workshop and the Chicago-based artist group AfriCOBRA (African Commune of "Bad" Relevant Artists) these groups aimed to use Black identity, style, and worldview to empower Black communities, foster solidarity, and instill self-confidence.
This exhibition is possible thanks to the curatorial efforts of Steven Albahari, publisher of 21st Editions. All production, supervision, and technical preparation of the prints were handled by Martin Axon, and printed by Martin Axon and Kevin Kornemann.
